Net Zero aspirations and current realities

The rush to net zero shows zero sign of slowing down. In fact it is accelerating, which it so patently needs to do. Yet as Pilita Clark in the FT points out eloquently this week, the fundamental building blocks for achieving anything close to a low carbon world within a generation are simply not in place: ‘Yet for many businesses, the rush to net zero looks like a looming car crash. These groups face rising pressure to be both environmentally and financially sustainable at a time when the green technologies they need are still on the drawing board; government policy support is paltry and a small group of influential but poorly understood umpires are judging their progress.’

In our view, everyone bar none needs to get a grip on this reality, demand rapid changes from our governments, both national and local, while there is time to achieving something that resembles what was solemnly agreed in Paris in 2016.

As the pandemic is slowly brought under control, responsible citizens and governments can turn with urgency and drive to addressing the climate crisis.
